Pippi Longstocking was created by the Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren in 1945. Like many great things, the story about little Pippi was almost a coincidence – the writer's daughter Karin got sick and was bored in her bed. She asked her mom to tell her a story. The girl wished for the character in the story to be named Pippi Longstocking. Astrid Lindgren concluded that a girl of such an unusual name has to be unusual with everything else as well.
If we take a better look at Pippi, what we are looking at is in fact just a very average child. With her carrot-coloured hair, her potato-shaped nose and extraordinary big lips she has all the predispositions of becoming a frustrated, bitter person. Her character traits, though, help her turn all her drawbacks into virtues. From an average girl she is turned into an unusual girl. From a lonely into an independent one. From a weak one into the strongest in the whole world.
