Johanna Spyri wrote Heidi during the Franco-Prussian war to entertain and comfort the wounded and the refugees in those tough war days. The love story between young readers and Heidi has been lasting ever since.
The merry girl Heidi runs barefooted after goats, faces independently every situation, representing a lively spirit, inspiration and the feeling of freedom that every child wants to be identified with. Although Heidi grows up without parents, thanks to her grandfather she does not lack love and care. This is why it is exactly Heidi who feels the most sympathy for Klara, the sick girl.
This story helps us escape the material world for a little while at least and join Heidi running on the green slopes.
